Building traffic to your website is I think one of the toughest challenges about the internet today. There are numerous ways to approach this challenge such as article writing, link exchanges, traffic exchanges, directories and of course programs like adwords and similiar services. The thing about wbesites is that each one is different from all the others. But in one very important respect they will be the same. And the key component of a website is “purpose”. What is the ultimate goal of the website?
To explain my meaning is simple. Do you sell a product? And who do you sell your product to? Well if you sell to consumers then you have a B2C website. Business to Consumer websites are of course everywhere on the internet. And they are all the same in the fact that they all want to sell to an end consumer. This means the strategies that they’ll implement will be similar. In the case of marketing to consumers then they’ll probably make use of a system like Adwords which is paid search to make an impact on the market.
Now on the other end of the spectrum is a website like www.SmallBusinessDelivered.com where we rely on “Organic Search” to make our mark. Any website in fact that is information based will be in this situation. Paying to attract visitors is not economically feasible. You’ll inevitably pay out more than you take in. But if your website is going to rely on organic search the one thing I will tell you that is the most important thing you can learn is ”Be Patient”. The fact is that building up traffic through organic search while it is cheaper it takes a lot longer.
The point I am trying to get across is that if you are going to build a website you must first understand its ultimate purpose and goals and then decide what route you will take to achieve those goals.

I have to say that publishing any kind of website and actually getting people to notice that website requires a very in depth level of study to achieve success. Recently myself and author Steve Smith had a couple of in depth discussions on our BlogTalkRadio Show about making money online and how hard it can be. We discussed this topic because we are both amazed about how people seem to think the internet will allow them to get rich quick but instead they end up broke real quick.
The internet is an unbelieveable opportunity for people wanting to go into business for themselves. But I am an advocate of those businesses being of a sound proven product and not based on something like selling someone else’s diet pills or crappy exercise equipment. A virtual store is really no different than a brick and mortar store. Your store needs to offer a product people want. It needs to be easy to navigate, it should be attractive, and items need to be appealing and easy to purchase. When a potential customer visits your home page it is the same as them walking through your front door. These are facts that you need to keep in mind.
The point I am trying to make though is that just like any business you need to educate yourself in its operations, marketing opportunities, products, etc. Don’t just jump in but instead take your time and study. There is a right way to start a business that can lead to long term success and a wrong way that can lead to quick failure. The internet is not a get rich quick landscape but it certainly does offer a great deal of opportunity.
